Movie Review: Joy and Heron🦴
Have you ever been angry at someone because you felt wronged, only to have your feelings change completely once you learned the reason behind their actions? This simple concept is the core of the short animated film Joy & Heron. Despite its relatively short running time, the film successfully conveys a profound message about empathy, understanding, and kindness.
The story begins with a man who is going fishing with his pet dog named Joy, who goes with him on a boat. While the man is preparing his fishing gear, a heron appears and starts stealing worms from the bait bucket. Joy, of course, is not happy and barks loudly, trying to chase the heron away. Joy's owner, who does not understand the situation, simply scolds him to be quiet. The conflict escalates when the heron keeps returning, leading to a tug-of-war with Joy that causes the worms to break. Joy felt victorious when his owner chased the heron away and even praised him. However, that pride turned to pity when Joy saw that the heron was actually carrying the worms for its starving young. Realizing that the heron was doing this to survive, Joy changed his attitude. He then voluntarily gave the worms to the heron. In return, the heron brought Joy a fish, ending the story on a harmonious note.
This film conveys the message that we should not judge others too quickly. Empathy and kindness can change and become mutually beneficial relationships. Heron teaches us about a mother's struggle for her children, while Joy represents those of us who are sometimes too quick to judge others before understanding their reasons.
The film uses CGI animation with soft and expressive colors. The faces of Joy and Heron help the audience capture emotions without the need for words. The scenes on the water and the atmosphere of the boat create a peaceful atmosphere, contrasting with the conflict that occurs. Without dialogue, this film relies on background music and sound effects. The soft music reinforces the change in mood, from tense to emotional, then happy. The silence at certain moments adds depth to the meaning.
Body language is the main dialogue in this short film. Heron's gaze, Joy's barking, and simple movements are enough to convey a universal message about empathy. This film can touch all audiences. Children can learn to share and understand. Parents can use it as an example to their children about the importance of empathy. Even adults can reflect on how often we judge others without knowing the reason.
For me, Joy & Heron remind us that in life, we often act like Joy, who is always angry first and asks questions later. In fact, everyone has a story that is not always visible. This film makes me think how good it would be if, before judging, we tried to understand the person. Joy & Heron shows that kindness doesn't always come from the beginning. Sometimes, it is born after we learn to see from another person's perspective. With empathy, relationships that were initially full of conflict can turn into mutual support.
Have you ever misjudged someone and then changed your mind after learning the truth? What can you learn from that experience?
